What is SPC Flooring?

SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite flooring. This is a type of luxury vinyl which combines the qualities of stone and plastic for a highly durable and aesthetic floor.

This features a core made from a composite of natural limestone powder, polyvinyl chloride, and stabilisers. It also features layers, including:

  • Underlayment: Some SPC floors come with an attached underlayment for added sound insulation and underfoot comfort.
  • SPC core: This makes the floor less prone to expansion or contraction due to its rigidity, stability, and waterproof properties.
  • Decorative layer: A high-definition photographic layer gives the floor its natural appearance, mimicking materials like wood or stone.
  • Wear layer: This top layer is designed to resist scratches, stains, and fading with its clear and tough surface.

How is SPC Flooring Made?

SPC floor undergoes a complex process to ensure it is high quality and looks appealing. This process includes the following steps:

  1. Mixing: Limestone powder and PVC are mixed with stabilisers and additives in a high-speed mixer.
  2. Sheet formation: The material is then fed into an extruder to be melted and extruded into a thick sheet, creating the SPC core.
  3. Calendering: This sheet is then processed through calendar rolls that determine the core thickness.
  4. Lamination: A decorative core is then applied to the SPC core. This typically involves a photographic print of wood or stone. Then, a transparent wear layer is added on top to maintain the floor's appearance.
  5. Cutting and profiling: The layered sheet is then cut into tiles or planks. Edges are added for click-lock systems.
  6. UV coating: A final coating of UV lacquer is then added to enhance the floor's durability.

The Key Benefits of SPC Flooring

There are many benefits of SPC flooring for your home or commercial space. These include:

Durability

SPC flooring is ideal for high-traffic areas because it is highly resistant to scratches, stains, and general wear and tear.

Its UV coating also prevents fading from sun exposure.

Waterproof

With its excellent waterproof qualities, SPC flooring is ideal for installations in moisture-prone areas such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Easy Installation

Its click-lock system provides ease of installation for DIYers.

It can also be installed over various types of floors, reducing preparation time. This is perfect for time-constrained projects.

Comfort and noise reduction

This floor offers comfortability with pre-attached underlayment. A second layer of underlayment can be paired for additional cushioning.

SPC’s dense core helps prevent noise from entering the home from outside, creating a peaceful environment.

Low Maintenance

SPC flooring is easy to clean, only requiring regular brushing and occasional mopping.

It doesn't retain dirt or grime, and its durability reduces the need for repairs or replacements, helping you save money in the long run.

How to Choose the Right SPC Flooring

For a more comfortable underfoot experience and better thermal efficiency, opt for a thickness of 6mm or more.

If you want to install an SPC floor in a commercial building or home with children or pets, opt for a wear layer of 0.5mm for enhanced durability.

With a range of styles to choose from, including hardwood, stone, and ceramic tiles, you can find a floor that complements your style.
