Case Study: Balau Curved Deck Project
Q&A with Andy Robinson
-
What problem or need led to this project?
Due to the old deck being softwood, it started to develop rot, so we decided a hardwood deck would be the best long-term solution.
-
What specific outcomes were you aiming for?
We wanted longevity and a high-quality finish, which led us to choose a hardwood decking.
-
What tools, technologies, or methods did you use?
When planning the project, we decided to use posts secured with Postcrete and sealed in bitumen, as we wanted the posts to last as long as the hardwood. A circular saw and jigsaw were used for all cuts.
The joists were secured to the posts using coach bolts. Joist tape was used to help prevent timber rot and maintain the structure’s integrity.
Camo screws were used for the deck boards so water wouldn’t sit in screw holes, and because they are fixed at an angle on the side of the boards, it also improved the overall finish as the fixings are not visible.

How did you find working with Andrea at B&F Specialist Timber?
Working with Andrea at B&F Specialist Timber was a great experience. The pricing was very competitive, the delivery was reliable, and the colour variation of the timber was excellent. The hardwood itself is extremely durable, only needing oiling rather than annual varnishing, and the customer service throughout the project was outstanding.
-
What are you most proud of about the project?
The curved step, as it really sets it apart from other decking projects. Bending the hardwood was a challenge that required lots of clamps and soaking the timber.
Setting the posts to attach to the curve was also tough, as I didn’t know how flexible the wood would be. To solve this, I set the posts further back than needed so I could pack them out to achieve the ideal curve.
Conclusion
This project is a great example of how thoughtful design, quality materials, and skilled craftsmanship can completely transform an outdoor space. By choosing durable Yellow Balau hardwood and paying attention to detail in both structure and finish, the result is a long-lasting, visually striking deck that stands out, particularly with its unique curved step feature.
