From 3x2 timber to 4x2 timber, we have the wood needed to create and install the perfect timber cladding. Not sure where to start? Below we’ve compiled a guide dedicated to the process of how to install external timber cladding.

What is timber cladding?

Timber cladding is a type of external wall made from timber planks. Usually installed horizontally, timber cladding is a great way to spruce up an external wall, and brings a more natural and organic look to the home. Popular in both residential and commercial building designs, timber cladding can be versatile thanks to different wood grain types, staining and texture.

How to install external timber cladding - before you start

Before starting your project, there are a few things you should consider. Below we’ve outlined these considerations and explained how you can get the most out of your timber cladding project.

Choosing the right timber

The right timber should be moisture-resistant, fire-resistant and bug resistant. At Beesley & Fildes, we offer treated and tanalised timber that’s perfect for creating a timber-cladding wall

Horizontal or vertical cladding

The two provide completely different looks. Vertical cladding will emphasise height whereas horizontal cladding creates a softer minimalist look. Whatever look you desire, decide before you buy the timber, as it will influence the size of the timber you buy.

Timber width

Do you want thick or thin timber? Each has its own benefits. Thicker timber will work as a great insulator, whereas thinner timber will look sleek. Whichever width you opt for, make sure the timber you buy is all the same width so that it looks flush once installed against the wall.

The right tools

Before starting any project, it’s a good idea to have the right tools for the job along with any safety equipment you might need such as gloves, glasses and a hard hat.

How to install external timber cladding

1. Preparing the space

Before installing your cladding, you need to prepare the space. This can be done by covering the cladding area with a suitable material membrane that’s water resistant. This should be tacked onto the building and then taped to secure it in place.

2. Installing cladding battens

Once the membrane has been installed, you can get to work installing the cladding battens. These are usually pressure treated and are installed in order to provide a breathable gap between the cladding itself and the membrane.

3. Sealants

Once you’ve cut the timber to the correct size for your cladding, it’s a great idea to treat and wax seal the ends to prevent additional moisture from seeping into the wood. This is an especially good idea if you’re using softwood, which can absorb moisture easily. If you want your cladding to be stained, it’s also a good idea to do this at this point, as you’ll have a flawless finish without any staining on the exterior wall.

4. Cladding installation

At this stage, you’re finally ready to install your cladding!  We recommend installing each board with a gap of either 1mm or 2mm, as this allows for expandable space if the boards take on moisture. When it comes to the fixtures you use, we recommend using stainless steel screws which are more durable in a range of weather conditions.
