What timber should you use for a decking frame?

There are so many questions that can arise from building a deck frame or a raised deck. However, one of the most common questions we get asked is “what timber should you use for a decking frame?”. The answer to this question depends on varying factors, such as the size of the deck you wish to build, the type of timber wish to build with and the placement of your deck. Damp or relatively moisture-heavy areas of your garden would benefit from tanalised 3x2 timber, however, if the area is dry, you could opt for a timber that’s more suited to your style preferences.

Below we discuss the different types of timber you can use for your deck project, and which timber is best suited for different deck sizes, placements and more.

What size timber for decking frame

This depends on the size of the deck you wish to build, below we’ve outlined the different sizes we stock here at Beesley & Fildes, along with some tips on which timber to choose for your decking project.

3x2 Timber

Timber this size is ideal for DIY projects, joinery applications and more. If you want to use this size of decking for an outdoor project, tanalised timber (as mentioned above) is a great water-resistant timber that’s sturdy, decorative and long-lasting.

When it comes to decking, the framework is the most important part of the structure. Another great option we would recommend if you’re building a deck is our 3x2 CLS timber. Not only is this a more budget-friendly option when compared to the tanalised timber, but it will help you when it comes to moisture resistance and keeping bugs at bay.

If your budget is more flexible, we would also recommend our hardwood 3x2 treated timber, which is ideal if you’re looking for timber that already comes with a stained finish. To top it off, this timber is also treated to be fire resistant, which makes it perfect if your deck will have a BBQ or chimnea on top of it.

2x1 Timber

Often used for wall, roof or deck framing, 2x1 timber suits a variety of DIY projects. It can support a great deal of weight whilst also being lightweight and can be easily shaped to suit your specific needs. When compared to other sizes, 2x1 Timber is relatively budget-friendly, so it’s perfect for smaller decking frames or DIY decking frames. At Beesley & Fildes, we stock tanalised, treated and untreated timber, all of which can be used both indoors and outdoors.

4x2 Timber

One of the largest sizes of timber that we offer, 4x2 timber is made from quality wood and is perfect for larger decking projects, or decking frames that will be holding heavy furniture. If you’re looking at this range for your decking project, our higher-grade timber is perfect as it has fewer knots and will look a lot better in the garden. Alternatively, we offer rough-sawn timber, CLS timber and so much more. Treated timber is great for wet or damp conditions, and CLS is ideal if you’re looking for durable timber for your deck.

At Beesley & Fildes, we offer a wide range of adaptable timber suited to varied DIY and construction projects that can be cut and stained to your liking.
