How to Prepare

Begin by wearing appropriate PPE. This includes safety glasses, gloves, and a dust mask to protect yourself from flying debris and sharp edges.

When lifting the heavy blocks, lift with your legs and not your back to prevent pulling your muscles.

Clear the area beforehand to prevent any tripping hazards. If you’re working indoors, open all the doors and windows to allow the fumes to escape, especially when working with cement and mortar.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Laying Breeze Blocks

Once you have gathered the correct tools and materials, follow the next steps to begin laying your breeze blocks for your structure:

1. Plan your Wall

Determine where you want to place your wall.

Then, consider the height, length, and thickness for the desired layout.

2. Lay the Foundation

Use a shovel to dig up a trench for the foundation of your breeze block wall. This should be around twice the thickness of your blocks.

Then, lay the gravel into the hole and mix and pour your concrete into the hole until it reaches the lip of the trench. Use a hand tamper to compact the gravel and a bull float to smoothen and level the concrete.

3. Prepare the Mortar

Gather your mortar mix or create your own using sand, water, and cement by mixing them in your mixing tub or wheelbarrow.

Use 1 part cement, 4.5 parts sand, and 0.5 parts water for the perfect consistency.

4. Lay the First row of Breeze Blocks

Apply a layer of mortar onto the foundation of your trench. Use a trowel to smoothen the mortar for a level surface.

Place the first breeze block firmly into the mortar, starting at the corner for a straight wall. Check the block is straight by using a spirit level. Then, continue to add each block, laying them next to each other and applying mortar to the side of the blocks for a secure fit.

Maintain around a 10mm gap between each block for the mortar joint.

5. Add the Additional Rows

Once the first row is complete and the cement has dried, add the next row of breeze blocks on top.

Start the second row with a half block so that the joints are staggered. This is designed to add additional strength and sturdiness to the structure. Regularly check each block is straight with the spirit level and string line.

6. Complete the Wall

Once you have achieved the desired height of your wall, use a trowel or sponge to scrape off any excess mortar.

Allow the wall to cure according to the manufacturer's guidelines.
