Hardboard is a traditional, dense, fibre-based sheet used for floor covering and levelling old wooden floorboards.
Popular for its affordable price, hardboard provides a smooth, long-lasting finish, ideal for creating a smooth base for laying carpet, vinyl, or underlay. Since it’s made from very fine wood fibres, it’s lightweight and easy to install, resulting in a floor that doesn’t look bulky.
It has a slightly textured side that helps it grip the substrate and a smooth face for a seamless finish. Hardboard can be fixed in place with ring-shank nails or staples to keep it securely in place and minimise movement over time.
Blockboard, on the other hand, is a lighter, stiffer panel that is less flexible than hardboard. It’s made from strips of solid softwood that have been glued side by side to form a strong, stable panel perfect for interior joinery projects.
These boards are easy to handle and are commonly used for shelving, cabinet doors, and furniture, where you want a good level of stability without excessive weight. If you need something long-lasting that won’t bend or flex, then blockboard is the way to go.
