Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an 8x4 sheet of plywood weigh?

The weight of 8x4 plywood will depend on its thickness. At Beesley & Fildes, our plywood is available in gauges ranging from 3.6mm to 25mm.

You must have a more reinforced structure to support your wood if you choose thicker 8x4 plywood sheets.

If you don’t consider weight during construction, it could result in structural issues with your building project. You’ll also need to regard your safety: carrying heavy sheets upstairs can be risky!

Plywood is a heavier, denser material than other solid wood products because of its manufacturing process. All 8x4 plywood sheets contain multiple layers of soft veneer glued with a rosin adhesive.

The thicker your plywood, the more sheets and adhesives stick together, leading to wood with a density only rivalled by hardwoods.

For example, our 12mm plywood (with an imperial sheet thickness of ½) weighs, on average, 20.4kg. Our thicker 25 plywood (with an imperial sheet thickness of 1 inch) weighs around 38kg.

How much does an 8x4 sheet of plywood cost?

The cost of our cheap 8x4 plywood sheets depends on its thickness. At Beesley & Fildes, we offer competitive pricing on all of our plywood products, using only the finest quality materials for your build’s success.

Our Far East Marine 6mm plywood costs £31.53 per sheet.

We price the Q Mark Exterior Hardwood 12mm plywood at £47.28 per sheet if you require thicker materials. Lastly, our Hardwood 18mm plywood sheets cost £54.67 per sheet and are perfect for building furniture, panelling or even musical instruments!

What is the difference between 4x8 and 8x4 plywood?

4x8 and 8x4 plywood refer to the same type of plywood, but the orientation of the grain differs.

Plywood sheets can be 4 feet wide and 8 feet long: when the grain of the outer layers runs parallel to the 8-foot length, it is called 4x8 plywood.

On the other hand, when the grain of the outer layers runs parallel to the 4-foot width, it is referred to by manufacturers and retailers as 8x4 plywood.

So, the difference is simply in the grain’s orientation in the outer layers of the plywood sheet. Both types can fulfil the same purposes, but the grain can affect the strength and stability of the sheet in different ways, depending on what you want to use it for.

When the outer layers of the plywood sheet have their grain running parallel to the short side (4-foot width), as in 8x4 plywood, the sheet is more stable in that direction.

This factor makes 8x4 plywood ideal for applications where the load will be primarily in that direction, such as for panelling or furniture backing.

What are the benefits of 8x4 plywood sheets?

Plywood is a popular building material utilised across various architectural and structural projects. But what makes 8x4 plywood sheets so effective?

  • Moisture Resistant: Plywood is resistant to water damage, making it the perfect material to use in residential settings, such as floors, doors and furniture.

  • Cost-Effective: 8x4 plywood sheets are typically more cost-effective than other types of wood products, such as solid wood or MDF, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious projects.

  • Aesthetically PleasingThe orientation of the grains in 8x4 plywood creates more visible seams: for this reason, it’s excellent for panelling or furniture backing, where the seams create a decorative pattern.
